Darrell Nield - Class of 1948 VIEW PROFILE

Darrell W. Nield passed away on July 21, 2021, in his home. Darrell was born December 7, 1929, in Montpelier, Bear Lake County, Idaho. He is the son of LaVar Broadbent Nield and Rhena Emily Wilkes Nield.

He graduated from Bear Lake High School in Montpelier in 1948. Shortly after graduation, he attended Brigham Young University, prior to his mission. At the end of the school year, he was called on a two-year mission to East Central States for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Upon returning home, he was drafted into the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a chaplain’s assistant for two years. While in the military, he married Waneen M. Moses in the Salt Lake Temple. They lived in Santa Ana, California, while he was stationed at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.

After 22 months they returned to Montpelier, where he worked with his brother-in-law for the early part of the summer. He was then given the opportunity to be Water Front Director at the Tendoy Council Scout Camp on the east side of Bear Lake.

He and Waneen then moved to Provo to complete his education at BYU. He graduated with a degree in Physical Education. At this point, they moved to Spanish Fork, where he was hired to develop a physical education program in the Spanish Fork Junior High School, and coach athletics. He was influential in the expansion of several additional sports and competitions within the school district. He loved teaching. Darrell also became a roofing contractor and provided jobs for many of the boys in the community.

After retiring from teaching, he served in the Provo Temple for 20 years. He loved serving the Lord. He had many church callings, including serving in the presidency of the Sunday School and the youth Mutual Improvement Association, in the High Priest group leadership, and in the bishopric. He loved serving in every calling he had the opportunity to do.

He is survived by two sons: D. Kurt Nield (Debbie) of Payson, Utah; Garth Nield (Carol) of Fort Worth, Texas; two daughters: Jolyn (Allen) Hanks of Spanish Fork, Utah; and Jana Lei (Ted) Dilworth of Rupert, Idaho. Preceding him in death are his parents; his beloved wife, Waneen; his son-in-law, Allen Hanks; and his grandson, Charles Webster.
