Robert Beckwith - Class of 1914

Funeral services were held Monday, July 1, 1957 at 2 p. m. in the Episcopal Church of Mountain Home for 11th district Judge Robert W. Beckwith, 62, who died Thursday night, June 27, 1957  while presiding over a ceremony at the Twin Falls Masonic Lodge. Judge Beckwith was stricken about 8:30 p. m. and was pronounced dead by a physician called to the Masonic building. Earlier in the day, Judge Beckwith had appeared in court as usual. Serving as junior judge of the local district, he was appointed in 1953 to succeed Kales E. Lowe, Burley, retired  He was a former prosecuting attorney of Elmore County and onetime U S. District Attorney. He also served briefly as secretary to Governor C. A. Robins. Born November 13, 1894, in Evanston, Wyoming, he came to Idaho with his parents, the late Lillian and John A. Beckwith, at age 10. They lived in Montpelier, where he was graduated from high school in 1914 and later entered the service in World War I. He was a graduate of the University of Idaho law school in 1920 and opened his practice in Mountain Home. From there he Went to Boise and in 1949 moved to Twin Falls to open a law practice with William Langley. A well known southern Idaho judicial official, Judge Beckwith also served as attorney for the Southern Idaho Production Credit Association. He was active in all phases of Masonic activity, being a past master of Elmore Lodge at Mountain Home and of King Solomon Lodge at Montpelier. He was a member of the Kayler Lodge at Twin Falls. Judge Beckwith was also a member of the El Korah Shrine, Boise, and deputy grand master of the A. F. & A. M. of Idaho. His wife died several years ago. He is survived by a son, Robert W. Beckwith, Jr., Boise; two brothers, John A. Beckwith, Jr., Boise, and Donald Beckwith, Las Vegas; two sisters, Mrs. Keith Norton, Las Vegas, and Mrs. Bertha Bruner, Los Angeles. Richard and Douglas Beckwith of Montpelier are nephews of Judge Beckwith.
