Nolan Nelson - Class of 1917

Nolan James Nelson, 69, Lava Hot Springs, died Wednesday at his residence June 5, 1966. 

He was born July 8, 1896, at Pegram. Idaho, the son of Byron and Polly Tubbs Nelson. The family moved to Montpelier where He was a member of the Montpelier High School class of 1917, however he did not graduate. Here he was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and filled a mission in the Southern States.

In 1919 he married Jennie K. O’Neil at Montpelier. They lived at Portalnd, Oregon, where Mr. Nelson attended barber school. After his graduation they made their home at Cokeville, Wyoming, and the moved to Lava Hot Springs where Mr. Nelson worked as a barber for 27 years. Mrs. Nelson died in October, 1954.

He later married Lenore Simpson and they made their home in Salt Lake City until her death in August of 1965. Mr. Nelson then returned to Lava Hot Springs.

He was a member of the Barbers Union, a charter member of the Lava Lions Club, and helped to organize the Chamber of Commerce at Lava. He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include a son, Thomas O. Nelson, Travis Air Force Base, California; a daughter, Mrs. Keith (Gayle) Ramsey, Lava Hot Springs; two brothers Roscoe Nelson, Provo, Utah, and Roland Nelson’ a sister, Mrs. Ed (Maude) Wuthrick, Montpelier; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Lava Hot Springs LDS Chapel with Bishop Wallace K. Whitehead officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery at Pocatello.

Friends may call at the Manning Funeral Chapel until Saturday morning and from 10:30 a.m. Saturday until service time at the Lava Hot Springs LDS Ward Chapel.
