Calvin Crane - Class of 1943

Calvin Dee Crane, Bennington, was killed Saturday, September 24, 1983, when the two and one half ton truck he was working on at his farm rolled backward approximately three feet, pinning him under the front wheel. Sheriff's report showed the wooden blocks under the tires did not hold. Crane was found by his son, Kent Crane, who called an ambulance. The Quick Response Unit was also dispatched to free Crane from the truck. He was apparently dead when the Q.R.U. arrived. Crane was active in many community organizations, including serving as president of the Maple Canyon Water Users, which he helped to organize. He was a member of the Maple Canyon Cattle Association and also served on the board of the Bennington Cullinary Water Association. He served for ten years, from 1965 to 1975, on the Bear Lake County Fair Board. He was president of the Bennington Cemetery District and was a driver of the Bennington school bus for Bear Lake School District at the time of his death.

He was born Nov. 4, 1924, in Bennington to James A.A. and Jesse M. Perkins Crane. He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1943 and served in the Army from 1943 to 1946. He participated in the New Guinea Campaign, Leyte and Luzon in the PhillIpines. He married Dorothy Ivonda Hart Aug. 12, 1947, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He began working for Monsanto Co. in Soda Springs in April of 1954. He retired in July of 1981, with 27 years of service. He also owned and operated his own farm in Bennington since 1946. He was an active member of the LDS Church, having served in many different positions. Survivors include his wife of Bennington; three sons, Stuart D., Paul Kent, and Richard Calvin, all of Bennington; four daughters, Mrs. Jerry M. (LaMae) Green.
