Calvin Buhler - Class of 1943

  

In honor of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great-great grandfather, brother, and friend.

Calvin Buhler, a former Pocatello, Idaho, physician passed away on February 15, 2018, due to causes incident to age. He was born in Bern, Idaho, on October 11, 1925, to Sophia Rebecca Kunz and David Buhler.

He attended school at the Bern two-room school, traveling to and from school by horseback. He graduated valedictorian from Montpelier High School and earned the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award in 1943.

Calvin married Elizabeth Gayle Whitman on March 20, 1949, in Montpelier, Idaho. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple December 18, 1953, and she is to be commended for her dedicated caregiving after his stroke 16 years ago.  

Calvin farmed and drilled wells in the Bear Lake area and later farmed in Minidoka County. He attended the University of Utah where he earned Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees and completed a 15-month surgery residency. He and his sweetheart Elizabeth Gayle moved to Pocatello where he opened a practice in general medicine and later changed to family practice. He performed many surgeries and delivered many babies including several of his grandchildren. He also worked as a corporate physician for the Union Pacific Railroad and J. R. Simplot Company. He belonged to the Pocatello Rotary Club.

As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he and Gayle served as proselyting missionaries in Cebu, Philippines, as service missionaries in Pocatello, Idaho, and as ordinance workers in the Idaho Falls Temple. He faithfully served in many callings including bishopric, high council, ward clerk, scoutmaster, stake missionary, and home teacher. He was one of the first to earn his Eagle Scout Award in Bern, Idaho. He served as scoutmaster taking a group of Boy Scouts to the LDS Jamboree in Farrugut, Idaho.  

Calvin had many interests and hobbies including: hunting, fishing, trapping, sailing, hiking, archery, water and snow skiing, sailing, boat building, art, creative writing, and storytelling. He was licensed as an Amateur Extra Ham Radio Operator.  

Calvin was preceded in death by three brothers Darwin, James, and Loraine and one sister Mary Ellen. He was also preceded in death by his grandson Joshua Joseph Allen and great granddaughter Maya Allen.  

He is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth Gayle and their five children: Bruce Calvin (Vicki) Buhler of Hanford, California; Gregory Charles (Patricia) Buhler of Kearney, Missouri; Cynthia Gayle (David) Galloway of Star, Idaho; Richard Clyde Buhler of Springville, Utah; and Rebecca Helen (Alan) Williams of Orem, Utah; as well as a foster daughter Donna Gill (Poponatui) Sitake of Spanish Fork, Utah. He is also survived by his brother Ronald Ethan (Janet) Buhler, brother-in-law Charles Walker (Barbara) Whitman and sister-in-law Carol Leigh (Richard) Hammett, and sister-in-law Monica Buhler. In addition, he is survived by the following grandchildren, great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild:

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018, at 10 a.m. in the Northridge LDS Stake Center located at 1660 North 200 West, Orem, Utah. Viewings will be held on Friday, February 23, 2018, from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary located at 495 South State Street, Orem, and Saturday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. just prior to the funeral services at the stake center. Burial will be the same day at 4 p.m. in the Bern Cemetery located off Main Street in Bern, Idaho.
