Betty Jo Kunz (Hyman) - Class of 1948

BETTY JO KUNZ "BJ" HYMAN Age 74, passed away peacefully from natural causes in a local hospital Thursday, January 6, 2005. Betty Jo was born January 16, 1930 in Bern, Idaho. She was the first daughter of seven children born to George Sidney and Edith Bills Kunz. Her mother and father were her pillars and her examples throughout her entire mortal life. Betty Jo, or BJ as she was called by those who knew and loved her, was an amazing woman. She could start ten projects and get them all completed without skipping a beat. BJ attended primary school in Montpelier, Idaho. She moved with her family to Idaho Falls, Idaho, when she was 11 years of age where she attended two years of junior high school. After the war broke out in 1942, her father moved the family back to Bern, Idaho, where she finished junior high and gradated from Montpelier High School in Montpelier, Idaho. BJ married Ray Jensen Matthews on June 5, 1947 in the Idaho Falls LDS temple. They moved to Los Angeles, California in April of 1952. They were later divorced. BJ married Jules George Mazy in 1957. They resided in Reseda, California. Their lives were blessed with a son, Scott, born October 15, 1957 in Hollywood, California. Jules and BJ were divorced in 1965. Scott and BJ later moved to Van Nuys, California. BJ married Haskell Jacob "Jack" Hyman in 1966 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were blessed with a son, Jack, born on January 8, 1968. The family moved to Sepulveda (North Hills), California, where they bought a home in which she lived up until her passing. They were later divorced in 1975. BJ was able to travel to Europe for six weeks in 1970 and had the fortunate blessing of visiting Bern, Switzerland, home of her forefathers on her father's side. BJ married Francis Joseph Nascimento on May 26, 1980. They were later divorced. BJ has worked all of her life and has been involved in the restaurant business the majority of her adult life. After moving to California, she first worked at the Brown Derby on Vine Street. Three years later she began work at the infamous Beverly Hills Hotel and its Polo Lounge. She had the privilege of serving all the major and minor movie stars of that era along with kings and queens of many lands, including the Emperor and Empress of Japan. When Scott turned seven she took a second job in the restaurant business working at Sorrentino's Seafood House in Toluca Lake near Burbank. She worked both jobs for seven years and then just the one at Sorrentino's. She was head waitress there and had 75 people working under her leadership. She loved her job and found it fascinating although she did admit to those close to her that she was growing a little tired. Starting in 1987 BJ worked at Encino Glen for 17 years where she was overseeing catering, weddings, bar mitzvah's and various parties and meetings. She also was responsible for both snack bars on the adjoining golf courses. BJ served as President of the Sepulveda Little League Ball Club for two years, PTA President, editor of her son Scott's school paper for two years. She won an award for writing the best school paper in the San Fernando Valley. BJ was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Northridge First Ward, Granada Hills Stake. She served in various positions in her church including dance director, Sunday School Teacher, Primary work, Visiting Teacher and Ward Relief Society President. BJ loved to read and was well versed. Her mind was quick and witty. She could pull off the impossible and beat any deadline. She didn't back down to any challenge and faced life head on, no matter what. She was well respected by co-workers and those whom she served. She was an excellent chef. Her greatest loves were her children, grandchildren, and family members. BJ is survived by her two sons, George Arthur Scott Mazy of Hollywood, California, and Jack Thorne of Hollywood, California; and three grandchildren, Jason, Jenna and Marisa. She is also survived by siblings, Gary George (Kathy) Kunz of Salt Lake City, Utah, Gereldine (Don) Longenbohn of Soda Springs, Idaho, Ronald Kent (Barbie) Kunz of la Quinta, California, and Roger Lee (Judy) of Pocatello, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Ray Matthews, Jules Mazy, Haskell Jacob Hyman, and Francis Nascimento; one brother, Douglass Ray Kunz, who died as an infant; and a sister, Barbara Ann Kunz Otteson. Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 noon, Monday, January 10, 2005, at Eternal Valley Memorial Park and Mortuary, 23287 North Sierra Hwy, Newhall, California.
