In Memory

Ruth Petereit (Porter) - Class of 1942

Ida Ruth Petereit Porter passed away peacefully on November 24, 2015.

She was born on November 21, 1922 in Montpelier, Idaho to Otto Petereit and Emma Steffenhagen Petereit. She was the tenth of eleven children. She attended the Montpelier schools and graduated from Montpelier High School. She later moved to Salt Lake City where she worked for Western Union, Arnold Machinery and Porter-Walton Company where she met her husband John Ford Porter, Jr. They were married on March 24, 1957 in Wells, Nevada, later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple.

Ida Ruth was active in the LDS Church and served in the primary in her ward for over 25 years. She was an avid reader and would often read several books a week. She taught herself how to do calligraphy and everyone always commented on how beautiful her handwriting was. She liked to travel with her family all over the Western United States. She would always remember the birthdays of her family and friends and be sure to send them greetings. She had a soft spot in her heart for animals, especially cats. She was often called "the miracle lady" by her doctors because of the many times she seemed to overcome impossible odds to recover from her health problems. Her courageous 20-year battle with both cancer and heart disease amazed and inspired many. She was truly "one tough lady."

She is survived by her son, Brad Porter and sister Norma J. Grandy, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, John Ford Porter, Jr., brothers George, Earl, Bill, Fritz and Hamlet, and sisters Pearl, Clara, Ruby and Lois, as well as nephews William, Steven, Ronald and Arlen, and nieces Norene, Carol and Jane.

She will be deeply missed.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful people at Holladay Healthcare Center and Millcreek Home Health & Hospice for the great care they gave Ida Ruth in her final 19 months.
