Edward Kobe - Class of 1947

KOBE, Edward R. (Age 80) Our beloved "Bompie" entered into rest July 7, 2009. One of three children (three brothers) was born to Anna M. and John P. Kobe, May 18, 1929 in Redding, CA. His family settled in Pocatello, ID where he began work at the JR Simplot Company. He proudly served in the US Army in 1951 and was called to active duty stationed in Korea until 1953. After receiving honorable discharge he returned to Pocatello where he met his wife (Norma of 46 years) and resumed work with the JR Simplot Company which led him into his career with the International Union of Operating Engineers. In 1963 he joined Operating Engineers local 370 in Boise, working as Business Representative Dispatcher. From the beginning Bompie was a business man. Throughout Bompie's prestigious educational career he attended Idaho State University and Chico State University. Although, he was and will forever be especially proud when the International Union sent him to Harvard Business School, in which he took intensive classes for the Trade Union Program. He later returned serving as Financial Secretary. In 1972 he joined A.G.C. Operating Engineers Apprenticeship and Training Trust in which he held the title Director/Coordinator. In 1980 he worked for the Idaho Department of Labor Relations Bureau. He later resumed work with IUOE and was elected President/Business Manager until he retired in 1991. During all this time Ed was an Avid skier, hunter, and fisherman. He was a great storyteller of the past and of life experiences. He loved to cook, play a good game of cards, had a great laugh, would sing at random, and told us all repeatedly "10% of what you earn is yours to keep." Through out his life Ed & Normie enjoyed entertaining family & friends, wined & dined, enjoyed traveling & boating. He is survived by his brothers, John & Victor, wife Norma, son and daughter in-law, Steve and Sharon, grandchildren, Nicole, Mark, Anessa, great-grandchildren, Anthony, Stevie, Johnathan, Karlee, Kobe, Alex. The family wishes to offer heartfelt thanks to the St. Luke's Hospice nurses and staff whose compassion and consideration was second to none. The family cannot possibly thank Bompie's outstanding neighbors and friends enough, who took such great care of him and Grammie these past years and his last month with meals, goodies, and an occasional cocktail hour. A celebration of his life will be held September 12, 2009 at his home in Boise, 2064 Crystal Way, from 1:00-4:00pm.
