Maxine Stephens (Smedley Chapman) - Class of 1949

Maxine Stephens Chapman, age 93, passed away on Aug. 26, 2024 at her home due to cancer. She was born on June 9, 1931 in Montpelier, Idaho to Winnie Hymas and Owen Welker Stephens.

She married Donald Dayton Smedley on June 24, 1949. They had three children together, Janet, Richard, and Sherril. They lived in Montpelier, Idaho; Salt Lake City, Utah; Soda Springs, Idaho; and St. George, Utah.

She was remarried to Vernon Jess Chapman in the Jordan River Temple on July 23, 1994. Jess had seven children from a previous marriage. Jess passed away on October 25, 2007.

Maxine was a faithful member of the church and fulfilled many church callings including Relief Society president and Young Women president. Maxine and Jess served a senior mission together in the Jackson, Mississippi mission.

Maxine had a life filled with love, laughter, fun and activities. She loved reading, hiking, bicycling, cross country skiing and camping. She was a great friend, a great mother and a wonderful grandmother.

Maxine is preceded in death by: Winnie Hymas and Owen Welker Stephens (parents), Kathy Muir and Gladys Schafer (sisters), Richard Smedley (son), Rochelle Smedley (daughter-in-law), Vernon Jess Chapman (husband), Trevor Searle (grandson), David Chapman (stepson), Farrin Smedley (granddaughter), Kade William Smedley (great grandson).

Maxine is survived by: one sister, many beloved children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at McArthur Funeral Home, 160 West 700 South, St. George, Utah, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024.
