In Memory

Wayne Stevenson - Class of 1940

Wayne Wilford Stevenson, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away peacefully July 3, 2010 of natural causes in Gilbert, Arizona. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Erna Glauser Stevenson, sons Craig (Christine), Ronald (Alan), Kevin (Debbie) and daughter Lori Stevenson Shaw (Dennis), and his brother Reid Stevenson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Letha and Kenneth Stevenson, and two brothers, Odell and Ray. Of greatest joy to Wayne are his nine grandchildren, Scott, Alisa, Tyler, Phillip, Clint, Jared, Ken, Elizabeth, and Daniel, and four great-grandchildren. He was born September 20, 1922 in Clifton, Idaho. He met and married the only woman he ever loved in 1941 before enlisting in the Army. He was one of those now considered part of "The Greatest Generation" serving as Master Sergeant in the European theater in the Second World War. Wayne was a paratrooper, was wounded, and then honored with numerous medals for his bravery and leadership skills. As with many of his fellow soldiers he always downplayed the role he served to bring peace to the world. After returning from Europe Erna and Wayne made their home first in Montpelier, Idaho and then in various places in Idaho and in Utah where he served in management for the J. C. Penney Company, Lerner Shops, and Gibson's Discount Center. Wayne spent much of his life sharing his love of the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping with his children, grandchildren and other family members as well as showing his love for family and friends with generosity and compassion. He was also a good friend to all who he knew and many relied upon him for friendship and good advice. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and remembered with great fondness his callings, especially as a temple worker in the Salt Lake Temple, where he worked with his wife. "Grandpa", as all of his family came to call him, will be sorely missed but know that he is now at peace and with family members and friends who preceded him in death. We love you Grandpa, so pick up your fishing pole and head out to the nearest stream, at peace, knowing Grandma is being well cared for until she joins you. A funeral service will be held in the LDS chapel at 4100 Camille Drive (2480 East), Salt Lake City on July 10th at 11:00 a.m. There will be a visitation at the chapel before the services from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in his name to the National Kidney Foundation .
