In Memory

Eugene Smith - Class of 1940

Howard Eugene Smith, 88, died at his home on January 22, 2012. Howard was born to Florence and Wells Smith, one of twelve children, on February 25, 1923, in Georgetown,Idaho. He attended elementary and high school in Georgetown. Shortly after graduation, he was drafted into the army. While doing basic training in Brigham City, Utah, he married Kathleen Alaire Hoff on November 19, 1943. He was later shipped out to Panama. Until his death, he was the only surviving veteran of World War II in Georgetown.

After his discharge, Howard and Kathleen settled in Georgetown, where they bought a home and raised their four children.

Howard worked at many jobs over the years, mostly in the plants and mines around, besides running his farm. He retired from Beckers in Soda Springs.

He and Kathleen spent many good times camping, fishing, hunting and riding their horses. After Howard's retirement, they spent their winters in Quartzsite, Arizona, where they made a lot of new friends. Howard was known as "the little cowboy" because of his fancy boots and his hat with a feather in it.

Howard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, his parents, ten of his siblings, and a daughter-in-law.
Howard is survived by his four children; Sandra (Gary) Leissring of Montpelier, Tim (Wendy) Smith of Montpelier, Becky Lowe of Montpelier and Ted Smith of Montpelier; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was known for his earthy sayings and his love of practical jokes. We will miss him every day.

In keeping with Howard's final wish, there will be no services. Cremation is under the direction of Matthews Mortuary.
