Gary Potter - Class of 1976

Gary Ryan Potter, 20, of Idaho Falls, died Friday morning following an auto accident near Las Cruces, N.M., while on a mission for the LDS Church.

A resident of both Idaho Falls and Rexburg areas during his life, he moved with his family and attended schools in several states including Washington, Utah, California and Idaho.

He was graduated from Bear Lake High School at Montpelier.

Born Nov. 20, 1957, at Rexburg, he was the son of Gary D. and Gertrude Hammond Potter. After graduating from high school, he worked for a short time for Union Pacific Railroad before attending Ricks College at Rexburg.

Active in the LDS Church, he served as a Deacon's quorum president, Bishop's assistant in priest's quorum and as a Family Home Evening Father. He was called to his mission in March of 1977 to the Alburquerque, N.M. Mission.

A member of the Boy Scouts organization, he was active in sports including basketball, baseball and football.

Survivors include his parents of Idaho Falls; two sisters, Mrs.ZuZann Transtrum and Leisa Potter, both of Idaho Falls; three brothers, David B. Potter, Jon Lee Potter and Don Wayne Potter, all of the family home; grandparents, Mrs. Ivie L. Potter and Mrs. Lila C. Hammond, both of St. Anthony.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the LDS 16th Ward Church at 9th St. and Boulevard with Bishop Bill E. Doman officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home and an hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be at Fielding Memorial Park in Idaho Falls.
