Jay Beckwith - Class of 1945

Edward J. Beckwith, 23, died of head injuries at about 8 PM, Sunday, August 27, 1950 in the Caribou County Hospital in Soda Springs following an automobile accident that occurred about two hours earlier at the railroad pass near Soda Springs. Three other occupants of the car. Dennis Gardner, 32, owner, and Doyle Brown, 37, both of Afton, and Tommy Kvarme, 28, of Bennington, were treated for minor Injuries and dismissed Monday, according to Mark Wilson, Idaho State Police, investigating officer. Driver of the car was undetermined. Officer Wilson said the car, traveling west on the Old Oregon Trail, had just crossed the grade separation when it apparently got out of control, and left the highway on the left side. Mr. Beckwith, thrown clear of the car, never recovered consciousness. The son of the late Edward J. Beckwith and Stena R. Beckwith was born August 7, 1927 in Montpelier. He had resided here all of his life having graduated from Montpelier High School in 1945. A veteran, he served in the Army from January, 1946 to February, 1949 and during this time was with the First Constabulary for two and one half years in Weisbaden, Germany. He was in the reserve and had only recently taken examinations at Fort Lewis and been ordered to report for duty September 14. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.  Besides his mother he is survived by two brothers.  Services were held in the Community Church.  Burial was in the Montpelier Cemetery.
