Alfred Kunz - Class of 1938

Sgt. Alfred Kunz, 24. son of Mr. and Mrs. Alma A. Kunz of Fort Steele, Wyoming, former Bern residents, is missing in action over Germany since July 31, 1941 according to a telegram received Friday from the Secretary of War. Sergeant Kunz was a rear gunner on a Flying Fortress, and had been In England since about June 15. In the last letter received from the missing man under the date of July 21, he was attending school in England, according to his sister, Mrs. Wayne Burke of Montpelier. Before enlisting in January, 1942, Sergeant Kunz was employed here om the Union Pacific Railroad as a brakeman.

Remains of the late Staff Sergeant Alfred Kunz will be buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alma Kunz of Bern, were recently informed by the military. Sergeant Kunz was a gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress and was shot down over Munich, Germany on July 31, 1944.  The remains were initially buried in the Unterhaching Cemetery near Munich. Shipment of his remains is pending.
