Donald Kunz - Class of 1938

Donald Eschler Kunz, 68, died Friday, May 20, 1988 in Bear Lake Memorial Hospital after a long illness.  He was born July 1, 1919 in Montpelier to Seth Noah and Emma Eschler Kunz.. He lived his whole life in Montpelier attending local schools and graduating from Montpelier High School.  He married Leah Pugmire on August 22, 1940 in the Salt Lake Temple.  He served in the US Navy during World War II as a carpenter's mate on a floating dry dock stationed in Guam.  He was in construction working for C.E. Jewel for several years and then in 1953 establishing and operating Don Kunz Construction.  Many buildings in the Bear Lake area were built by his company.  The Montpelier Stake Center, the chapels in Liberty and Cokeville, the Matthews Mortuary, the Medical Arts building, the Modern Drug, the Mountain States Clinic building plus many homes and small structures were built by his company.  He was an active member of the LDS Church serving as scoutmaster, member of the Second Ward bishopric, bishop of the Third Ward and high councilor.  He was also active in civic affairs, serving one term as a Montpelier City councilor and as a member of the board of directors for Tri-State bank.  He is survived by his wife, two daughters and eight grandchildren.  Funeral services were held in the Montpelier Stake Center.  Burial was in the Montpelier Cemetery.
