Pfc. DeVerl F. Stevens, 19, was killed in action December 19, 1944 in Germany, his wife, Mrs. Juley DeEtte Dunn Stevesn, was informed Sunday by the adjutant general.

Pfc. Stevens, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Merlin D Stevens of Montpelier, was born in Montpelier April 15, 1925.  He attended grade and high school graduating with class of 1943. At the time of entering the service January 17, 1944,he was studying pharmacy at the University of Idaho, Southern Branch, Pocatello.

A member of the infantry assigned to a headquarters company, Pfc. Stevens took his initial training at Camp Roberts, California and landing in England in October.  Surviving in addition to his widow and parents are one brother, Arvel M. Stevens of Seattle, Washington and two sisters, Jeannine and Marlene Stevens both living at home in Montpelier.

Memorial services for Pfc. DeVerl F. Stevens, killed in action December 16 (?) in Germany, were held at 12 pm. Sunday in the Second ward chapel with Bishop Alvin Tueller presiding.  Military honors were accorded by Post 63, American Legion under direction of Commander E L Downing.

Following the posting of colors at the veteran's shrine, a quartet comprised of Mrs. B. E. Munford, Mrs. Clyde Phelps, Max Haddock and Paul Haddock, sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul."  The invocation was pronounced by President Lorenzo Swensen; song, "Rock of Ages," quartet; speaker, representing American Legion, Joseph Einzinger; vocal solo, "Lord's Prayer" Max Haddock accompanied by W. R. Baker; speaker, Bishop Tueller; presentation of American flag and pledge of allegiance.  L. S. Wedel; song; "Sometime We'll Understand".
