Sherman Burgoyne - Class of 1937

Sherman Lorenzo Burgoyne, 76, prominent retired Montpelier businessman, died April 27, 1995, in the Bear Lake Memorial Hospital following a stroke. He was born March 23, 1919, in Montpelier, to Joseph Ahlbon Burgoyne and Vilate Bunney Perkins Burgoyne. He attended schools in Montpelier and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1937 where he played varsity basketball. Sherman attended college at Utah State Agricultural College in Logan. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He graduated with a B.S. degree in business. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army as a warrant officer, spending four years in Belgium. Sherman went into business with his father in 1945, at the Blue Light Service Station (later the Amoco station). Upon the death of his father, he assumed ownership of the station, and operated it until his retirement in 1986. Sherman was married to Eldene Lewis Sept. 3, 1976. She died July 1, 1983. He was a member of the LDS Church and served as ward clerk for six years. He has been honored by The News-Examiner as "Father of the Town" because of his kindness and concern for others. He also had the honor of being Grand Marshall of the County Fair Parade. Sherman loved his cabin on Bear Lake and entertaining his family and friends there. He loved fishing and hunting and the outofdoors. Sherman was an avid booster of the "Aggie" basketball and football teams. He attended most of the games and secured tickets for other fans in Bear Lake. He is survived by one sister, Venice Burgoyne Rich, of Montpelier, and a close personal friend, Laura Ferguson of Fish Haven. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two sistcrs, Gwen Eccles and Margaret Johnson, and one brother, J. Richard Burgoyne. Funeral services were held Monday at 1 p.m. in the Montpelier First/ Fourth Ward Chapel. Burial was in the Montpelier Cemetery.
