Larry Esterholdt - Class of 1958

Larry Kent Esterholdt, 23, of Pegram, was killed outright about 1 AM Monday, August 3, 1964, in a car-truck collision on Wyoming State Highway 89 at a point south of the Etcheverry ranch about one mile north of Border The victim was riding In a car driven south by Janice Sparks of Cokeville The driver of a northbound cor, whose name was not immediately available. had parked with lights on A southbound ten-wheel logging truck halted earlier on the high-way, slightly to the north of the car, to investigate the blockage of the road by the vehicle, according to Coroner Nile Matthews, who took Miss Sparks to the Bear Lake Memorial Hospital. Miss Sparks. possibly blinded, by car lights, according to LaVoy Lewis, who was among the first to reach the scene, ran into the I left rear duals of the truck. The, Sparks car was demolished and Miss Sparks received extensive injuries. The tragedy followed a family picnic at North Beach State Park. Mr. Lewis, Kaye Sparks, her sister, Janice, Mr. Esterholdt, and a cousin of the girls, Douglas Bitten, had gone to Cokeville in Mr. Lewis' car and had driven only a short distance before coming on the accident scene.

The son of Grant and Margaret Elizabeth Clark Esterholdt, the young man was born August 30, 1940, in Montpelier. He attended grade school in Pegram, junior high school in Montpelier, and graduated from Montpelier HIgh School in 1958. He lived with his parents on the Esterholdt ranch. His mother is an elementary teacher in Montpelier. Active in the LDS church, he taught Sunday School at the Pegram Branch, and was secretary of the Third Quorum of Elders. One of the first to enlist in the local Army Reserve Unit, Mr. Esterholdt held the rank of sergeant. He was also a member of the Bear Lake Jaycees.

Surviving besides his parents are one brother and two sisters, Robert Grant Esterhold, 21; Marcia Alayne Esterholdt, 17, and Connie Lou Esterholdt, 13, all of Pegram. An infant brother, William Dennis, died in 1946.

Services were held Wednesday in the Montpelier Third-Fifth ward chapel and interment was in the Montpelier Cemetery under the direction of Matthews Mortuary.
