Robert McLaughlin - Class of 1931

Challis -  Robert H. McLaughlin, 54, of 440 South Twelvth, Pocatello, was found dead in his automobile on a rural Road here Sunday night, July 14, 1968.

Custer County Corner Glen Reed found carbon monoxide was the cause of death.  A garden hose had been attached to the car’s tail pipe and run into the closed interior of the car, Sheriff Bert Mecham reported.  The car was found at 9:20 P. M. on Wilson Lane, one mile north-east of here, by a local resident.

Mr. McLaughlin, a longtime Garrett Freightline employe  had been in poor health.

Born January 13, 1914, at Paris, Idaho, he was the son of John and Elizabeth Hendry McLaughlin.  He spent his early life in Paris and attended schools at Montpelier, and later attended the University of Idaho, Southern Branch, at Pocatello.

He was employed by the Colant Trucklines at Pocatello prior to World War II.  After military service with the 27th Infantry Division in the Pacific 

Theatre during World War II, he returned to Pocatello and was employed as a line driver by the Garrett Freightlines .

He married Avanell Pugmire on March 24, 1942, in Paris, Idaho.

He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church and of Teamsters Local No. 983.

Survivors include his Widow, a son Lt. J. G. Robert A McLaughlin, stationed at Whidby Island Naval Air Station, Wash.; a brother, Jack McLaughlin, Chico, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Richard (Irene) Hurd, Denver, Colo.; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth McLaughlin, Montpelier; and one grandson.
