(1973) In 1938 I drove to Washington D.C. with Russell Schoper and his Mother-In—Law to vacation with Helen (Stevens) and Doc Nielsen. I visited Mrs. Schoper, who was secretary to Senator Pope and they offered me a job in his office. I worked there until the Senator was defeated and then went to work for the Department of Navy Personnel. I was Secretary on the Promotions Board and wrote the final letter for President Roosevelt’s signature.

I was introduced to Navy Lt., John R. Conner and we were married Oct. 30 1941, just six weeks before Pearl Harbor. Mr. Conner served as a Lieutenant with the Seabees and retired as a Commander, but continued working for the Navy Dept. and completed 30 years with the Navy.

In 1943 our daughter was born and in 1945 our son, who is now a Dentist practicing in Arlington, Va. and also teaching at Georgetown University. My daughter has 3 children each 5 years apart. She has one son and two daughters. Her husband graduated from the University of Virginia with a Masters in Electrical Engineering. He is with the Secret Service.

During the years my children were small, I worked with Girl Scouts for four years as a Leader and as Program Chairman on the Girl Scout Council. Next I took Cub Scout Leader training and was a Den Mother for three years. Next I took China Painting and painted several Dinner sets and Luncheon sets. When John was in the 6th grade and Julia Rae In the 8th, I went back to work part time. I attended Strayer Business School for a brush up course and took several classes at George Washington University.

We traveled in Canada and back and forth to Montpelier and down to Florida while the Children were small. Also, we took a cruise to Bermuda.

In 1963 I married Col. Laurence C. Sherman, USAF, a pilot. We spent that winter visiting California. His brother is a Judge in Berkeley. We returned to Maryland in April and lived on Chesapeake Bay, cruised all summer in our 40 ft. Pembroke Cruiser and had a house at Chaulk Point. We met so many nice couples, cruised to Oxford, St. Michaels, etc. There are so many rivers flowing into the Bay, the Rhode River, the Wye River with the large Wye Oaks and Plantations, and the Severn River where the academy is, and where the boys from the Naval Academy sail with their colorful Spinnakers.

Later we moved to Annapolis, a real fun picturesque City, where I started art lessons at St. Johns College and studied Water Color under a private teacher.

We moved to Cape Coral, Florida five years ago. The climate is just wonderful. We have orange trees, a grapefruit tree, papayas, mangos, bananas, hibiscus, bougainvillea, bird of paradise, and roses.

I belong to the Symphony Women of Fort Myers and am taking art from Veronica Korjus, originally from Latvia. I am just completing a portrait of my daughter.

Our street is inhabited by many retired Doctors and the greatest neighbors anyone could have. We live on a corner lot with a canal on two sides. The Caloosahatchee River is nearby. I love living near the water. I became so used to it in Annapolis, that I really miss it when I’m away from it.
