Edwin Hirschi - Class of 1928

Dr. L. Edwin Hirschi, age 93, retired professor of Mathematics Education from the University of Arizona, Tucson died April 2, 2003 in American Fork, Utah. Born Oct 12, 1909 in Montpelier, ID a son of Jacob J. Hirschi and Rosina Knutti Hirschi, he married Winona Buxton May 18, 1934 in Bozeman, MT. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. 

Dr. Hirschi graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor's degree in mathematics, 1932. He later received both the master's and Ed.D degree from the same institution. His educational career began as a mathematics teacher in Montpelier and Preston, ID. He went into school administration and served as superintendent of schools in Bancroft and St. Anthony, ID. He then taught at the University of Utah for 16 years and became an Associate Professor of Education there. 

Following this experience, he accepted an appointment as a professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Arizona, where he served until his retirement, 1976. Interspersed through this period he did advanced study at the University of Idaho and at Stanford University. He held memberships in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, American Association of University Professors, Mathematics Association of American, Phi Kappa Phi, and was listed in Who's Who in American Education and the Directory of Members of the LDS Church in Higher Education and School Administration. Dr. Hirschi was active in many state and national committees and a member of the Advisory Board of the School Mathematics Study Group of the National Science Foundation. 

He was a frequent speaker at state and national conventions. He conducted a series of Summer Institutes for Mathematics Teachers financed by the National Science Foundation at both the University of Utah and the University of Arizona. He published extensively, including a popular college textbook on the teaching of mathematics. He was active in the LDS Church his entire life, serving in many positions, including serving in the bishopric of the Cottonwood Eighth Ward, Salt Lake City and in several high councils. 

He was privileged to have lived during the administration of nine Church presidents and to have personally known Presidents George Albert Smith and Spencer W. Kimball. In l976 he and Winona retired and built a home in American Fork, UT. In l978 they were called on a mission to the Swiss Temple, where they served for 20 months. Upon returning home, they continued their temple work for nearly 10 years at the Provo Temple, along with continued service in their ward and stake. 

Survivors include his wife; four children and their spouses, Sharen Hirschi Smith (K. Wayne), Sandy, UT, Mona Lee Hirschi Clark (George) Rocklin, CA, Jay Edwin Hirschi (Alyce Lee) Chicago, IL, Marveen Hirschi Dickey (Carter E.), Tucson, AZ; 11 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. 

The family would like to thank J.R. and Merlene Adams for their loving service to Ed and Winona, which enabled them to stay in their home for many extra years. Thank you also to the staff of Heritage Care Center for their loving care of Mom and Dad, and for family support. Services will be Tues.
