Lydia Schick (Radke) - Class of 1928

The Idaho Statesman, 10/10/07

Lydia Grace Schick Radke, 97, passed away Oct. 6, 2007, at her daughter and son-in-law's home, surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Letha, Idaho LDS Church. Burial will follow in the Emmett Cemetery. Lydia was born Jan. 28, 1910, in Montpelier, Idaho, the fifth of 10 children of Frederick and Minnie Schick. Lydia was blessed with a lovely voice and sang in a quartet that performed for many events around the valley. The day after her high school graduation Lydia went to work for the telephone company as a switch board operator. When Lydia was 24 her beloved mother passed away and she remained at home for six years and raised her three younger sisters. She transferred to the telephone office in Salt Lake and then was asked to be chief telephone operator at Wendover Air Force Base from 1940-1944. Lydia married Ernie Radke July 30, 1944. They moved to Emmett, Idaho in 1945 where their only child, Linda, was born. Lydia was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and held various callings into her 80's. Lydia served over 45 years with the Cancer Society and also on the hospital auxiliary. Best of all, she was a loving, caring, giving, spunky lady with a great sense of humor. Lydia and Ernie worked hard, enjoyed life and their family, and shared much with others. There was great joy when they were sealed in the Boise Temple Jan. 17, 1998. Lydia is survived by sisters Selma and Virginia, daughter Linda and husband Arn, grandchildren Shannon (Kevin) Cutler, Shellie (Paul) Hurt, Tonya (Gary) Shreeve, Heidi Swenson, and Jared Hagmann. She has 10 precious great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and seven brothers and sisters. Lydia's enduring legacy to her family is her faith and her love and concern for others. The family thanks the staff of Four Rivers Hospice for their kind and loving care, especially Mary Ellen, Holly, Linda.
