Dean Stephens - Class of 1934

Neldon Dean Stephens died peacefully Thursday, February 3, 2000. Despite being hindered by several strokes in the past few years, he was allowed to rally before his death to converse and reminisce with his family, for which we are most grateful.

Dean was born January 14, 1917 in Montpelier, Idaho to John Edwin and Louisa Perkins Stephens. He worked on the family ranch and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1934 and from Utah State University in 1938. He married Faye Houskeeper in Salt Lake City June 4, 1941. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

After 44 years of service as a railroad freight clerk and agent, he retired from the Western Weighing and Inspection Bureau in 1977. He served as bishop of the Rose Park Fifth Ward from 1982 to 1984; served a mission with his wife to the Los Angeles Temple Visitors Center in 1978/79 and also served as an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple.

Dean is survived by his wife Faye and children: Michael (Diane), Newport Beach, CA; Dennis, San Francisco, CA; Marsha, Salt Lake City, UT; Claudia (Bill Westerfield), Lyndonville, VT; Jeffrey (Carol), Sandy, UT; and Brent (Stephanie), Centerville, UT; grandchildren: Danielle McFadden-Bullio; Andrew Wischerath; Christopher, Cara, Jeffrey, Julia, Jordan, Jaimie, Bret, Hailie, Cole and Tanner Stephens; brothers, LaGrande, Earl, Charles and Sterling Stephens; sister, Shirley Wheatley; and sister-in-law, Arlene Stephens.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 8, at 11 a.m. in the Rose Park Fifth Ward Chapel, 1155 North Boy Scout Drive. (1220 West). Interment in Larkin Sunset Gardens, 10600 South 1700 East, Sandy, UT.

Dad will always be remembered for his unfailing dedication to his family, his unselfishness and his constant willingness to serve the Lord and his fellowmen. We will sorely miss his support and companionship, his sense of humor and tidy yard, and picking fresh vegetables from his garden.
