The Herald Journal 07-14-2000

LOGAN - Louis A. Jensen, 83, passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at Logan Regional Hospital. Louis was born in Montpelier, Idaho, on Sept. 11, 1916, the son of Vinnie and Jacob Jensen. He grew up there, with the responsibilities and pleasures of a boy on a farm. After graduating from high school, he attended Utah State University, majoring in agronomy, and graduated in 1939. He began work on his master's degree at Utah State University, which he later completed, and also worked as Assistant Farm Supervisor for the Farmers Home Administration.

In June of 1941, he and Alberta Turner were married in the Logan, LDS Temple. Louis was drafted and served in the Army from 1944 to mid-1946. He worked on the training staff at Fort Ord, Calif., and later in the Army recruiting service in Provo, Utah. He then began his lifelong career with the Utah State University Agricultural Extension Service, working as county agent first in Millard and then in Duchesne County, stationed in Roosevelt. In 1953, the family moved to Logan when Louis took a position as State Extension Agronomist. For the last portion of his career, his title was Extension Weed Specialist. Louis loved his work, including the association of his colleagues and his travels throughout the state, and brought great enthusiasm to it. He retired in 1980.

After retirement, Louis and Alberta served as officiators in the Logan LDS Temple for over 15 years. Throughout his life, Louis also served in a variety of positions in the LDS Church, including stake high councilor.

Family has always been the center of life for Louis and Alberta. They enjoyed a loving companionship and had 59 years of married life together. They created a nurturing and solid foundation for their children. Spending time with children and grandchildren was one of his greatest joys. Louis also enjoyed hiking and working in his large garden. Friends and neighbors know his generosity, his friendly ways, and his wonderful smile.

Louis is survived by his beloved wife, Alberta, of Logan. Their children are Richard (Dorothy), Margaret (David Kitterman), Dorothy (Roylan Croshaw) and Barbara (Mark Hall). They have 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Louis' surviving siblings are Forrest Jensen, Mae Davis and David Jensen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vinnie and Jacob Jensen, sister Zula Jensen Nelson, brothers Grant and Earl Jensen, and a grandson.

The funeral will be held at noon on Tuesday, July 18, at the Logan LDS 5th and 18th Ward Chapel, 502 E. 300 North.
