Dayle Brown - Class of 1938

MONTPELIER - Robert Dayle Brown, 79, died Thursday, June 10, 1999 at his home following a lengthy battle with illness.

He was born Feb. 4, 1920 in Montpelier to Fergus and Laura Mae Holmes Brown. During his early childhood the family lived and farmed in the Banks Valley area during the summer, and moved into Montpelier during the winter. After graduating from Montpelier High School he worked for a Swedish cabinet maker in Pocatello, and then moved to Los Angeles, where he worked in a furniture factory. During World War II Dayle enlisted in the Navy and served as a ship's carpenter in the Pacific Theater.

Dayle married Helen Virginia McWhirter on September 3, 1947 in Boise, and the marriage was later solemnized in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. Their family included five children and two foster sons. Dayle worked most of his life as a cabinet make, carpenter and contractor, and constructed both the VirDay Motel and Cafe. Dayle and Virginia and family operated the motel and leased the cafe.

Active in the LDS faith, Dayle served as Scoutmaster, elder's quorum president, counselor in the bishopric and high counselor. After retirement, Dayle and Virginia served a mission for the church operating the Bishop's Storehouse located in Montpelier. He was also active civically, having served on the city council and in the Rotary Club. He loved hiking, hunting, fishing, camping, doing genealogy and temple work.

Dayle is survived by his wife, of Montpelier; the following children, Brian C. Brown of Montpelier, Brenda and Ray Lewis of Boise, Beverly and Richard Colvin of Montpelier, Barbara and Robert Morrison of Shelley, Bruce and Colleen Brown of Salt Lake City, Byron and Lori Rock of Roosevelt, Utah, and Berton and Margaret Rock of Anaheim, Calif.; one sister, Maxine Cutler of Montpelier; 33 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 14, at 1 p.m. in the Montpelier Stake Center, with Bishop Rick Merritt conducting. Burial will be in the Montpelier Cemetery, where military rites will be performed by the Montpelier VFW Post No. 3884, with services under the direction of Matthews Mortuary.
