Gary Hess - Class of 1957

Honolulu, Hawaii—Gary F. Hess, 53, longtime Honolulu resident and businessman, formerly of Pocatello, Idaho, died September 8, 1991 At St. Francis Hospice after an illness.

He was born June 1, 1939 in Montpelier, Idaho, the son of Ferris M. and Lenna Hess. He was a 1957 graduate of Montpelier High School, and furthered his studies at the University of Idaho-Moscow, and Idaho State University in Pocatello, where he received his bachelor’s degree in education. He was an educator in Pocatello for several years, where he taught at the elementary and junior high levels.

Gary moved to the island of Oahu in 1966 and taught elementary school for two years. In 1968 he bagan a management career with Foodland Corp. and was active in the business communities on each of the major Hawaiian Islands. He enjoyed water sports and was an avid supporter of many charitable and civic activities in the islands. He was deeply dedicated to his work, to his family, and friends.

He is survived by a daughter, Julie A. Hess; mother, Lenna Hess, Pocatello; his companion, Alfred Akana; a sister, Margene (Robert) Hudson of Thomas, Idaho, a brother, Wayne (Kristie) Hess, Bainbridge Island, Wash.; two nephews and three nieces.

Friends may call from 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, 1992 at Diamond Head Mortuary, Honolulu, until services at 4 p.m. His ashes will be scattered privately.
