Lyman Lindsay - Class of 1944

Willard Lyman Lindsay was born April 7, 1926 in Dingle, Idaho to William Henry Lindsay Jr and Phoebe May Humpherys. World War II began while he was attending Montpelier High School. After graduating he joined the Navy, where he served as an Electronic Technician, Petty Officer Second Class for 18 months until the end of World War II. Willard served as a missionary for the LDS Church in the Texas-Louisiana Mission from 1946 to 1948. He graduated from Utah State University with a B.S. in 1952 and a M.S. degree in Soil Science in 1953. While there, he met and married Lorna Lance, his wife of 59 years, in 1951. In 1956 he received a Ph.D. in Soil Chemistry from Cornell University with minors in Chemistry and Plant Physiology. Willard worked as a Soil Chemist for Tennessee Valley Authority from 1956-60 in Florence, Alabama before becoming a Professor at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, Colo., where he became an internationally known scientist. He graduated 31 Ph.D. candidates, 12 M.S. candidates and was a major professor for 20 post doctoral fellows. He published over 150 research papers and reviews and presented over 240 speeches and lectures in 30 countries and six continents. He received many awards, including Outstanding Teaching Award, Sigma Xi Honor Scientist, CSU Centennial Professor, Faculty Research Award, Distinguished Service Award and was named a University Distinguished Professor, the highest recognition bestowed on any CSU faculty. In 2009, he was named a Legend in the Department over the last 100 years. The LDS Church was always an important influence in Willard and Lorna's family. Willard served as a branch president, stake mission president, counselor in three bishoprics, bishop, high councilor four times, stake executive secretary and in a stake presidency. He served as an ordinance worker in the Denver and Provo temples for 14 years. Willard is survived by his wife Lorna, sister Mary Wilding of Idaho Falls; brother Rao Lindsay of Salt Lake City; and sister Ellen Ralph of Columbus, Ohio; daughters Diane Flaten (Don) of Austin, Texas; Janice Wright (Blake) of Salt Lake City; Cheryl Lysy (George) of San Diego, CA; son Calvin Willard Lindsay (Jana) of Boise, Idaho; eight grandchildren and three great-grand-children. Funeral Services will be held Fri., Oct. 1st at 11 a.m. at the Edgemont Stake Chapel, 303 West 3700 North in Provo. Interment will be held at Orem City Cemetery.
