Leah Mouritsen (Wright) - Class of 1923

Leah Mouritsen Wright, 96, passed away Thursday, July 6, 2000, at the Pioneer Valley Hospital.

She was born March 11, 1904, in Bennington, Idaho, to Mourits and Carrie Hansen Mouritsen. She graduated from Montpelier High School and was the valedictorian for her class. Living with a special aunt in Logan, Utah, she worked her way through college, graduating with high academic honors. She taught business classes in the secondary schools of Preston and Montpelier, Idaho and at Granite High School in Salt Lake and then at the Branch Agricultural College in Cedar City, transferring later to teach at Utah State University. Leah married Estel Wright on February 20, 1940, in the Mesa, Arizona LDS Temple. They eventually settled in West Valley City (Granger), where they were active in the real estate and land development business. Leah revered her family and enjoyed living close to several brothers and sisters in the West Valley area. She was a mother to many of her nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss her greatly.

Leah and Estel were generous with their means, endowing colleges and universities in the area with scholarship funds available to deserving students. Many family members were able to attend college and go on missions because of their support. Leah was active in the LDS Church holding many leadership and teaching positions. Her business and community involvement included the Salt Lake City Altrusa Club, the Salt Lake Lady Realtors and the Utah State Legislative Council. She was a volunteer at Primary Children's Medical Center for eleven years, serving as president for one year. She was a real estate broker for Wright Realty, Inc. and a director in the American Housing Corporation. Estel died March 24, 1986 and until recently Leah was active in conducting their business affairs with the help of close friends and relatives.

Funeral services were held July 10, 2000 at the Granger 3rd Ward Chapel at 2820 West Lehamn Ave (3590 South), in West Valley. Interment was in the Valley View Memorial Park.
