In Memory

Ivins Schmid - Class of 1952

Ivins Talmage Schmid 81, know by many as “Pinky” of Bern, ID died Dec. 27 2014 after a valiant battle with cancer at Bear Lake Memorial Skilled Nursing Facility surrounded by his family.

Ivins was born Dec. 14, 1933 in Bern Idaho to Nellie and Robert Schmid. Ivins attended school in the little red school house in Bern until eighth grade when he went to high school in Montpelier. After graduation he attended Utah State and later the Trade Tec in Provo UT. Ivins served a mission for the LDS church in South Africa.

Ivins met and married “the apple of his eye” Julie Ann Francis of Ogden, UT on April 1,1966 in the Logan LDS temple. The couple raised their six children in Bern ID.

Ivins worked hard his whole life; he enjoyed working with his hands and being able to make and fix things. He worked many years on farm for Jenkins Equipment, and he had his own business, Schmid Machine Shop, for 13 years where he traveled all over the valley fixing just about anything anyone needed. He finished his working career as a millwright for Jensen Lumber repairing and building machines for the sawmill.

Ivins was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has happily served in many different church callings throughout his life, such as scouting, teaching Sunday school,as Bishop of the Bern Ward, and as a High Counselor. In his later years he enjoyed being a tour guide at the Historic Tabernacle in Paris ID.

Ivins’s crowning achievement in this life was his family whom he loved dearly. Ivins’s dedication to visiting, loving and caring for his “dear wife” has been in the words of his granddaughter “an example of a true love story” to all who have watched him over the years. To his children and grandchildren he was our leader, our hero, our go-to guy with any and all of life’s ups and downs.

Ivins loved his Heavenly Father and his Savior Jesus Christ, he had a strong testimony of the gospel which he willingly shared with others and leaves behind a legacy of faith, hard work, a little dry humor, a lot of love, and kindness to all.

Ivins is survived by his “beautiful bride of 48 years”, Julie Schmid, children: Doug (Stephanie) Schmid of Sandy, UT, Denise Schmid of Harker Heights, TX, DeAnn (Roger) Stott of Blackfoot, ID, Debra (Dean) Egbert of Preston ID, Dannette (Kyle) Athay of Bennington, ID, and 19 grandchildren. Brothers David Schmid, Marvin Schmid and Sisters Zenna Mae Bridges and Connie Jensen. Ivins was preceded in death by his son Darren Schmid, parents, Robert and Nellie Schmid, sisters Anna Vigos, Alice Gortcinsky, Dorothy Gilgen, Julia Schmid, Emma Lou Skinner, and Brother, Robert Schmid. His Mother and Father-in-law Jim and Ida Francis and many others who will be so happy to greet him in Heaven. The family wishes to thank Dr. Clay Campbell and the staff at Bear Lake Memorial Hospital and Skilled Nursing for their compassionate care of Ivins during his final days.
