Karen Bunn Hayes, 80, passed away peacefully, February 10, 2018, surrounded by loving family and friends. 

Born Sept. 2, 1937, in Montpelier, ID., Karen was the youngest of three children and daughter of James Elmo and Alice Velma (Johnston) Bunn.  She grew up in Montpelier attending the Lincoln School and graduating from Montpelier High School in 1955.  She met her future husband, William “Bill” Dorain Hayes, as a Sophomore in high school. They later married on Oct. 17, 1958 in the Logan LDS Temple.

Karen and Bill began their life together in Montpelier.  Soon after they moved to a family home in Georgetown where they began their family.  Daughter, Valerie Ann Hayes, was born three years after they were married with son, Jonathan Bunn Hayes, following two years later.

After high school, Karen worked for the telephone company as a telephone operator.  When she had their first child, she stopped working to take care of her children.  When the children were older, she was hired as a Clerk at the Georgetown Post office.  Later, in 1985, she became Postmaster where she remained until she retired in 2003.

Throughout her entire adult life, Karen also took care of Jonathan as he is handicapped and requires much care.  She saw to it that he was integrated into the Public School system even though he is 100 percent blind and that he graduated on time.  She also learned herself and then taught him to read and write braille.  Later, when he began to have further health problems, she took complete care of all his needs until at the age of 50 he had to be placed in the nursing home.

Karen was actively involved in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  She held many positions in the Church and was heavily involved in writing and directing plays and roadshows, which was her favorite thing to do.  Karen was also a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers (DUP), which she was proud of, and she was a board member and later secretary of the Bear Lake County Historical Society.

Karen was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sister, Edra Bunn, and her brother, Todd Bunn and sister-in-law, Ruth (Widmer) Bunn.

She is survived by her children Valerie Ann (Hayes) Ross and Jonathan Bunn Hayes of Georgetown, ID; nephews Matt and Conn Bunn of Nampa, ID, and their respective families; grandchildren Joseph Hayes and Constance Paige Brooks of West Valley City, UT, Steven Douglas Brooks and Taira Marie Boren of West Jordan, UT, Nathan Charles Brooks of Ogden, UT, Rebecca Elizabeth Green of Draper, UT, and Matthew August Brooks of Georgetown, ID; and great-grandchildren Sage Lynn Brooks, Jordan Douglas Brooks, Matthew Levi Douglas, Nicholas Dean Brooks, Lily Ann Brooks, and Bella Susanne Brooks.

A viewing in her honor will be held at the Georgetown LDS Chapel, Friday evening, Feb. 16, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m. at the Georgetown LDS chapel. There will be a Viewing in the Georgetown LDS Church Friday, Feb. 16th from 6-8 p.m., and from 12 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Georgetown Cemetery.
