In Memory

Jim Spencer - Class of 1952

James Edward Spencer, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away on May 25, 2016 at the age of 82. Jim was born on January 25, 1934, in Gloversville New York, to Thomas Horsley and Jean Reinhold Spencer. He married his sweetheart, Dorothy May Schmid on June 10, 1953, in the Salt Lake Temple. They have 8 children; Vickie DeCaires (Jim), Karen and Stephen (both died in infancy), Julie Thomson (Lloyd), Sharon Pearlman (Paul), Jamie Bayles (Tom), Michael (Martissa) and Laura van Beuge (Derrick). Jim and Dorothy have 30 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Jim's siblings are Arlene (Edward, deceased) Hanson of Fruit Heights, Thomas Spencer, deceased (Carol), Elaine (Jon) Daines of Nibley, Dennis (Lois) Spencer of Pocatello, and Fay (James) Roberts of Gladewater, Texas.

He attended school in Bear Lake County and graduated from BYU in 1956 with a degree in Microbiology. He was also commissioned as an officer in the US Air Force upon graduation. He completed his Masters of Science Degree from University of Southern California in 1972.

In 1956 Jim became a commissioned officer in the US Air Force and served for 23 years, traveling all over the world. Jim earned the rating of Master Navigator, worked in avionics maintenance, logistics and industrial management, quality assurance and plans and programs, and retired as a Lt. Colonel.

Jim loved serving others and was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was an ordinance worker for 9 years in the Ogden Temple, and loved serving in various leadership positions in Wards, Stakes, and Missions.

Jim was busy in retirement and served in several positions including Executive Vice President of the Ogden Board of Realtors, Chairman of the Board of the Avatar Organization, Member of the South Ogden City Planning Commission, Board Member of the Scare Canyon Ranch Association and was active in politics. He was skilled in woodworking and used his talents for select clients and those he loved. He could create anything he set his mind to and his family treasures every single handcrafted heirloom he made for them. He enjoyed the opportunity to transform an old cabin into a modern home in the mountains. He loved the cabin and we would like to think that he can see even better sunsets from where he is now.

The family is so grateful for the love and support of family, friends and neighbors. They would also like to express their love and gratitude for the angels that provided skilled care and service for Jim at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home.
