Charles Sorenson - Class of 1959

Charles "Chuck" Samuel Sorenson, 84, of St. Anthony, Idaho passed away at home Wednesday, February 12, 2025.

Chuck was born October 17, 1940, in Montpelier, Idaho to Gertrude and Arthur Paul Sorenson. He graduated from Montpelier High School and from Utah State University.

He served a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints serving in the newly formed Austria Mission.

Chuck married his high school sweetheart Patricia Lou Bagley on August 7, 1963, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in Personnel Administration and Industrial Relations, with a minor in Economics, he began a long and successful career with the U.S. Forest Service as a Business Trainee in the Budget & Finance department. During his 35 years with the Forest Service his family lived in McCall, Idaho – where Todd was born, Richfield, Utah – where Stacey was born, Kemmerer, Wyoming – where Suzanne was born, and Orofino, Challis, and Saint Anthony, Idaho. In 1990 he attended the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and served on a national committee to establish the Forest Service Law Enforcement training standards. He loved his role and the many friends he made as Fire Chief on a Regional Fire Team. He was the Administrative Officer for the Targhee National Forest when he retired in June 2000.

Chuck was an active leader in the community serving on the City Council for many years. On November 4, 1997, he was elected Mayor of Saint Anthony serving from January 13, 1998 – January 8, 2002.

Chuck was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints his entire life. He served faithfully in many callings including Bishop. One of his most impactful callings was as a Priest Quorum Advisor where he played a significant role in the lives of many young men through service projects, creative fund-raising projects, high adventure activities, and several trips to National Explorer Olympics.

He is survived by his children, Todd (Michele) Sorenson of Idaho Falls, Stacey (Rick) Hopkin of Lewisville, Texas, and Suzanne (Bryan) Stoddard of Saint Anthony, 10 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his eternal sweetheart Patricia Lou Sorenson, both parents, and his brother Paul Sorenson and sister-in-law Sylvia Sorenson.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday February 18, 2025 at the Saint Anthony LDS Stake Center, 247 E 4th N. The family will receive friends Monday from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. both times at the Stake Center. Interment will be in the Saint Anthony Riverview Cemetery under the direction of Bert Flamm Mortuary. Family suggests donations to your church humanitarian fund in lieu of flowers.
