Margaret Sherrod (Bearnson) - Class of 1917

Margaret Sherrod , 100, died October 9, 1996 in Salt Lake City.

She was born February 1, 1896 in Riverton, Alabama to Robert Atlas and Emma Laurine Tice Sherrod. She married Dr. Julius Benedict Bearnson, February 16, 1921 in Salt Lake City. He died October 17, 1959. She was an educator, Utah State Legislator, author of many books and articles. She has numerous publications including short stories, fiction, five juvenile books. Her most recent work appeared in the 1995 Utah History Encyclopedia.

Past president of University of Utah Womens Club, member of the National League of American Pen Women, member of the National Order of Women Legislators.

One of Margaret's great loves was her 35 years of teaching. She wrote of that time "I have been called teacher, Mom, Mother, Mama, Grandma and other names I won't mention, by my students. I still believe that teaching is the most important job in the world."

Survived by daughter, Dorothy Bearnson; sister, Eleanor Sherrod Midgley, both of Salt Lake City; nieces, Judith Kirkendall, Hilo, Hawaii; Carolee Saber, husband, Nick, and son Lee, Delta, Colorado; Jean Harvey and husband, William, Wake Forest, Illinois; Catherine Crapo and husband Ross, Victoria, Canada; Cherrill and JoAnn Galloway, both of Salt Lake City; nephews, Thomas Sherrod and wife, Katherine, Oakland, California; Michael Sherrod, Victoria, Canada; Scott Sherrod, Layton, Utah; grand nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by two brothers, James Clyde and Thomas R. Sherrod; five sisters, Fannie Bell Galloway Bowie, Carrie Midgley, Anne Sutton, Jeanette Powell, Eulalia Sherrod; two nephews James Clyde Sherrod II, Joseph R. Galloway.  Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Monday, October 14, 1996 at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401 South Highland Drive, where friends may call from 12:45-1:45 p.m. prior to services. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
