Steven Grunig - Class of 1972

Steven Robert Grunig, 24 died Friday, September 22, 1978 at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah following a short illness. Although an autopsy didn't show anything conclusive about his death, 15 1/2 years later it was discovered that he died from the Hanta Virus.

He was born June 11, 1954, in Montpelier, Idaho to Robert L. and Thelda Nowland Grunig. He married Donna Lewis, March 19, 1972 in Paris, Idaho.

He worked as a foreman at the Beker Industries phosphate plant in Conda. For Beker, he helped start up the Chemieplant in Brahe, West Germany. A lifelong Montpelier resident, he was an active memeber of the LDS Church. He had served as president of the Bear Lake Bowmen, belonged to the Montpelier City Volunteer Fire Department, and was a member of the Bear Lake and national search and rescue groups. He was also a member of the Bear Lake County Emergency Medical Training ambulance crew, and won awards in EMT competition and in pistol shooting. He was an avid sportsman and loved hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Kimberly Jean, and son Dorian Steven, and parents, all Montpelier; one grandfather, Charles E. Nowland, Dingle; a brother, Roger Lynn, and a sister, Barbara Ann King, both Montpelier.

Funeral services were held at the Montpelier Stake Center Tuesday, September 26th with Bishop Glay Homer conducting. Family prayer was offered by Bishop Floyd Lewis and Carol Holderby played prelude and postlude music. Speakers were Dr. Noall E. Wolff, Keith Tolbert, and Bishop Gary Lowder; "Not Now, But in the Coming Years": was sung by Dean Ward, Paul Haddock, Hulme Dunford, and Charles Hulme accompanied by Ruby Dunford. Mignon Jensen sang "Somewhere My Love" accompanied by Lois Lee Hulme Benediction: DeVerl King; Pallbearers were Roger Grunig, Raymond Williams, Brent Lewis, David Saxton, Glen Grunig, and Dewain Nowland.
