Joel Phelps - Class of 1957

Joel Phelps, 34, was killed August 27 at the Somerset Mine.  He was born September 14, 1939 at Montpelier to Hawley R. Phelps and the late Myrle Poole Phelps.  He graduated from Montpelier High School and had served with the US Navy as a Chief Petty officer on the USS Hancock.  He was a member of the LDS Church and was interested in hunting, fishing mechanical and electrical work and hobbies.  He married Janet Eileen Marier at Elko, Nevada on July 14, 1958.  They lived at Salt Lake City from 1963-1965 before moving to Paonia, Colorado. Mr. Phelps was employed as general maintenance foreman in the mine.  He was electrocuted while installing some equipment.  Surviving are his widow, five sons and two daughters.  Funeral services were held in the Paonia LDS Chapel.  Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Idaho Falls.
