Fern Mourtsen (Mokastet) - Class of 1925

Fern Mourtsen Mokastet, 87, died February 18, 1993 in the Bear Lake County Nursing Home in Montpelier.  She was born September 5, 1905 in Wardboro to Peter Christian and Martha Elizabeth Berrey Mourtsen and was the oldest of eight children.  She attended grade school in Montpelier and in 1925 graduated from Montpelier High School.  After graduation she worked in Montpelier for the telephone company and a local cafe.  On January 26, 1927 she married Anders Mokastet, a Norwegian immigrant employed by the telephone company. His employment took them throughout Ohio, New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania.  Their only child, a son, Dean, was born in 1931 and in 1950 was killed in a train/automobile accident.  Her husband Anders retired and they moved to Sciota, Pennsylvania where he died in 1970.  After her husband's death she continued to reside in Sciota until 1987 when she moved back to Montpelier.  She was a member of the LDS Church.  Funeral services were held February 23 in the Matthews Mortuary Chapel.  Burial was in the Montpelier Cemetery.
