DeOrr Michaelson - Class of 1940

OGDEN- Dr. Mike, of Ogden, Utah , passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at McKay Dee Hospital. He was born June 29, 1922 in Montpelier, Idaho to Chauncey and LaVone Michaelson. He cherished his mother dearly and decided to become a doctor when she died at a young age. He married Dena Donaldson on December 7, 1943 and served in the Navy during World War II as a tail gunner for dive bomber squadron 19 aboard the U.S.S. Lexington.

His son Richard DeOrr DeLos Michaelson was born while Mike was serving in the Pacific on October 29, 1944. Mike placed his son’s baby shoe in the cockpit of his plane as a good luck charm during the war. Among his military medals, he was awarded two Distinguished Flying crosses.

Mike graduated from the University of Utah’s pharmacy program in 1952 and medical school in 1960. He was part owner of the Medical Clinic North in North Ogden and a surgeon a McKay Dee Hospital. His medical practice was administered with a country doctor flare that is rarely seen today and was appreciated by his many loyal patients.

Mike was sealed to Dena Michaelson on May 26, 1955 in the Salt Lake Temple. They traveled endlessly throughout the U.S. in their motor home, including yearly trips to Disneyland with their two grandchildren, Zac and Rich. They danced their way through life together until her passing in July of 1992.

Mike married Lori Salisbury on January 14, 1995. Mike and Lori spent many of their 11 years together doing what they enjoyed most-traveling. They traveled many places throughout the United States, including their honeymoon trip to the Panama Canal. They also spent much time doing genealogy and temple work for their deceased loved ones. As a special addition to this beautiful marriage, Mike gained six stepchildren with whom he shared a mutual adoration and displayed a true fatherly love. Lori remained by his side and was a comfort and dedicated wife as his words of love and appreciation were spoken to her just before his passing.

Mike is survived by his wife Lori, son Rich Michaelson and wife Shanah, brother Lewis Michaelson and wife Doris, sister Donna Passey and husband Rex, his two grandsons: Rich Michaelson and wife Angie; Zac Michaelson and wife Holly, five great-grandchildren, Kennnedy, Jack, Chance, Cavin, Colin and a future grandson who is expected to born on Mike’s birthday.

Also surviving are his six step children Leah and husband Wayne Rasmussen, Ron, Eric and Matt Schroeder, Annmarie Manning and Jenna Niederhauser and seven grandchildren: Alex, Hailey, Madison, Taryn and Sadie Rasmussen and Alexis and Austin Schroeder.

Gramps was a world traveler, a jockey, golfer, pugilist, firefighter, doctor, story teller, father, husband, great gramps and a good friend. Words cannot express or sum up the life of such a great man. These are only excerpts in a life that touched many and neglected none. He proved an example of the purest love and selfless dedication to friends and family alike. He will be sorely missed.
