Ted Carleton - Class of 1936

Pfc. Edward W (Ted) Carleton, 26, infantry paratrooper, was killed in action December 17, 1944 on the Philippine Island of Leyte, his widow, who recently moved to Shoshone, and parents, Mr. and Mrs. A E Carleton of Montpelier, were informed Saturday by the Adjutant General.  The well known paratrooper went overseas in May of 1944.  he entered the service January 27, 1943 and took his training at Camp Mackall, North Carolina and Fort Benning, Georgia.

Pfc. Carleton was born May 6, 1918 in Salt Lake City and in 1928 accompanied his parents to Montpelier where they have since resided, his father being employed as agent for the Railway Express. In 1936, he graduated from Montpelier high school, where he set a record as an outstanding athlete, winning ten letters in three major sports, football, basketball and track. Prior to entering the service he was employed by the local O P Skaggs store and later by the Union Pacific railroad in Salt Lake City.

Besides his widow, Mrs. Roberta Goldbrough Carleton and parents, he is survived by a young son, Michael Edward and two sisters, Mrs. Pierce Brodkorb of Walla Walla, Washington and Mrs. James I Spratt of Montpelier.
