Darwin Solum - Class of 1948

Darwin Rodger Solum, age 80, passed away at home on April 18, 2010, after a long illness. He was born on September 1, 1929, in Georgetown, Idaho, as the fourth of five children to Orin Benjamin Solum and Florence Agnes Lamphere. The family then moved to Montpelier, Idaho where Darwin grew up. Darwin joined the U.S. Navy and served as a medic aboard the Valley Forge aircraft carrier during the Korean War. He married Zoe Paradice on June 5, 1954 in Pocatello, Idaho. They had a son Mark Stephen Solum. Darwin earned a bachelor's degree in human genetics from the University of Utah. He worked during his lifetime for several federal government agencies including the FAA. He also worked for Union Pacific Railroad. He was a member of the Acacia Lodge #17, Scottish Rite and a Shriner. Darwin's family would like to thank the Doctors and staff at the Veterans Medical Center in Salt Lake City and Superior Home Care & Hospice for care during the last days of his life. Darwin was preceded in death by his wife Zoe and his brother Robert Solum. He is survived by: his son Mark Solum and sisters; Marlene Helland and family, Maxine Haggerty and family and Belva Williams and family. According the wishes of the deceased, Darwin was cremated and no funeral services are planned.
