Joel Dunn - Class of 1953

Joel Sherman Dunn, 78, of Montpelier, Idaho passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Bear Lake Memorial Hospital in Montpelier. Joel was born on April 3, 1934 in Montpelier, Idaho the Eldest son of Sherman Roberts and Helen Dayton Dunn. He was raised in Montpelier and graduated from Montpelier High School.

In 1952 he joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Hawaii and Japan.

Joel married Maureen Westerberg on July 21, 1956 in Grace, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 32 years and retired in 1996.

Joel was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served as the Executive Secretary to the Bishop in the Montpelier 5th ward, and in the Sunday School Presidency in the Montpelier 4th ward. He was active in the High Priest Quorum and also held various other calling throughout his life.

He had a strong love and testimony of the Gospel and was a faithful member of the church. He had a deep love for his family and enjoyed spending time with his wife, daughters, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Joel loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He liked to sketch and was an artist. He also enjoyed walking and caring for his yard.

He is survived by his wife Maureen Dunn of Montpelier, ID, and two daughters, Susan and Robert Cory of Cokeville, WY, Janet and Craig Kawamura of Boise, ID, 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Robert (Kay) Dunn of Montpelier, ID, Donald (Abby) Grunig of Preston, ID, and three sisters, Shannon (Ronald) Grunig of Nampa, ID, Julie (Mark) Whitaker of Montpelier, ID, Jolene (Ron) Law of Meridian, ID. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman Roberts Dunn, Helen Dayton Grunig, and his Stepfather Jack D. Grunig.

Services were held on February 2, 2013 at the Montpelier 4th Ward Chapel (485 South 7th St). The burial was in the Cleveland Cemetery.
