In Memory

Mary Eileen Dunn (Lewis) - Class of 1946

Mary Eileen (Dunn) Lewis passed away after a brief health challenge on April 9, 2023, at Utah Valley Hospital. She was 94 years of age, born August 15,1928 in Montpelier, Idaho as the first child of Jesse Harold Dunn (MHS Class of 1925) and Winifred Roma Williams (Dunn) (also MHS Class of 1925). She was married to Charles Ivan Lewis, who preceded her in death on January 14, 2012.

Eileen was a registered nurse, having graduated through the nursing program at Los Angeles County General Hospital and then completed a master's degree later in her career. While she worked in doctors’ offices and hospitals, her primary employment was as a school nurse for the Los Angeles City Schools. This employment was supplemented in her later career as an adult evening school instructor in First Aid, CPR, and elementary nursing courses. Upon retirement in 1989, she and Charles moved to Provo to be closer to family, enjoying world-wide travel experiences with friends and family and her shared experiences as a Daughters of Utah Pioneers member. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving with callings in the auxiliary organizations of ward and stake. She expressed particular enjoyment serving in Family History and as a called temple worker at the Provo Utah Temple.

She is survived by her three children: Stephen Charles Lewis of Orem Utah and his three children, Carrie Eileen Mecham (Dale) of Wallsburg Utah and their four children, John Michael Lewis (Julie) of Vacaville California and their five children together with a total of twenty-one great-grandchildren. Eileen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, her younger brother, Gordon Harold Dunn (MHS Class of 1949) and a daughter-in-law (Stephen’s wife, Ruby Jo). The family expresses sincere thanks to the doctors and staff of Utah Valley Hospital Emergency Department (R. Dale Christensen, M.D.) and seventh floor (Shikha Bhan, M.D.) for the care of their mother in her final days with a special ‘shout out’ of gratitude to her sisters and brothers in the nursing profession for their loving care. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2023, in the Oak Hills Ninth Ward Chapel (1960 N 1500 East, Provo, UT). Visitation for friends and family will be held Friday evening April 21, 2023, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary (495 South State Street in Orem) and again Saturday morning prior to the service from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the chapel. Interment will be in the Montpelier Idaho City Cemetery as soon as the snow has melted off her grave site...Mom always did have a severe dislike/aversion/hatred of the snow.
