Husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and civil servant, Carl William Trussel, 90, passed away on February 23, 2022, surrounded by his three daughters. Carl was born on January 10, 1932, in Montpelier, Idaho to William and Wanda Jaussi Trussel. He was the eldest son of eight children. His father was a plumber and Carl learned to work hard at a very young age for the family business, Trussel Plumbing.
After graduating from Montpelier High School, Carl joined the United States Army and served in the Korean War from 1952-1954. Carl served on the front line with the 135th Combat Infantry Regiment, as a Rifle Sniper and Flame Thrower, where he spent most of his time throwing flames in foxholes destroying and exploding enemy bombs. He was awarded and honored the Combat Infantry Badge, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and two Bronze Service Stars. In 2013, Carl received the Korean Peace Medal from South Korean Officials in appreciation for the service rendered on behalf of their country. Carl was also fortunate to be part of the Utah Honor Flight in October of 2016. He enjoyed seeing the memorials built symbolizing the spirit, sacrifice, and commitment to his service.
After Carl's service, he returned home and married his eternal companion, Maurine Athay Trussel, in the Logan LDS Temple on September 12, 1957. Their entertainment was dancing. Every week they would go to the Paris Pavillion or Fish Haven Resort to dance. They lived most of their lives in Sunset, Utah raising four children; Toni (Fred) Bauman of Layton, UT; Jeffrey (Cindy) Trussel of Las Vegas, NV; Joy Trussel of Sunset, UT, and Nicole (Velden) Wardle of Riverdale, UT.
Religion was a priority in Carl's life and was evident in the many callings in which he served within the LDS church. Carl was the Bishop of the Sunset 4th Ward, Sunset Stake High Councilman, Sunset Stake Mission President, and Employment Specialist. In addition to church service, Carl was active in the community. Carl served as a member of the Sunset City Council for 10 years and President of the Sunset Board of Adjustments for 8 years. He has a great love for the city of Sunset. Carl and Maurine were also Advisors to the first Sunset Youth City Council. They were named Sunset Citizens of the Year in 1995.
After working for Hill Air Force Base as a full-time computer supervisor and part-time self-employed plumber, Carl retired from Hill after devoting 35 years to his career. However, Carl kept active by plumbing up until 5 years ago. Carl loved watching sports and having a Pepsi. He was always cheering on the Utah State Aggies, going to Broadway Musical Shows, spending time with his family, grandchildren, eating out, listening and dancing to polka music, and enjoying the summer days in the Bear Lake Valley with a fresh raspberry shake in hand.
Carl is survived by his four children, seventeen grandchildren, eighteen great children, two sisters, and three brothers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maurine Athay Trussel, loving parents, one brother and one sister.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 28, 2022, at 11:00 AM at the Sunset Stake Center, 220 West 975 North, Sunset, Utah. A viewing for family and friends will also be held prior to the funeral services, from 9:30-10:45 AM at the same location. Interment, Clinton City Cemetery.
