In Memory

Dorothy Barkdull (Thomas) - Class of 1945

Dorothy Barkdull Thomas passed away peacefully at her home in Salt Lake City, UT on October 31. 2020. She was born in Montpelier Idaho, December 15th 1926 to Verde Barkdull and Jessie (Collipriest). Her father Verde worked as a Conductor for the Union Pacific Railroad. Living just a short distance from the tracks, Dorothy as a little girl would lay in bed at night listening to the trains coming into and leaving town. She was able to tell the difference between a passenger steam locomotive and a freight steam locomotive.

At the age of 17, her Mother passed away, so many close relatives stepped in and helped raise Dorothy. During High School, she would meet the love of her life, a young man by the name of Gayle Thomas who preferred to be called "Deac". They were married on August 11, 1950 and would move to Salt Lake City, Utah.

Mom had the most important job anyone could ask for. She stayed at home and raised us kids. She had three children, David, Diane and Dean. We will always remember her fixing breakfast in the morning and getting us ready for school while listening to her favorite morning radio program. She made us a lunch and then it was off to school. When returning home in the afternoon, it was always wonderful having Mom at home. The aroma of baked cookies or maybe a cake and dinner in the oven. When Dad would get home, we all sat around the dinner table and would talk about the day. Dorothy and Deac were long time members of the Wasatch Presbyterian Church near their home. They made many friends through the fellowship of the church. She was a huge fan of the Utah Jazz and she could tell you about all the players on the team.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving Husband Deac (1926-2014) and her son in law Larry Brubaker, who unfortunately passed away in early October of 2020.
