In Memory

Jason Samuel Winward - Class of 1999

Jason Samuel Winward was born February 27, 1981 in Logan, Utah to Calvin and Catherine Winward. He was the second of five children. He attended Fredonia Elementary School in Arizona and Bear Lake schools in Montpelier, ID. Jason did well in school and loved sports. He played football, wrestled, and ran track. Jason had an amazing talent for remembering trivia, and could tell you everything about almost every sports team at both the collegiate and professional level. He made many lifelong friends in high school.

After graduation, Jason attended Ricks College in Rexburg, ID before serving an LDS mission to Jacksonville, Florida. He loved teaching the people and also developed an appreciation for shrimp and Deep South barbeque.

Upon returning home, Jason attended Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho where he met the beautiful Camille Woodland. They were married August 15, 2003 in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. From this perfect union came six amazing children: Elena, Rebecca, Mckenzie, Brooklyn, Matthew, and Nathan.

Jason graduated from ISU with his bachelor's degree and began teaching social studies and coaching wrestling in Preston, ID. He taught there for one year before moving to Blackfoot, ID. He taught at Mountain View Middle School for six years and was a favorite teacher to his students. During this time, Jason earned his Master's Degree in Education Administration from Arkansas State University. He was hired as the principal of Jefferson Elementary in Pocatello in 2014, and that is where he worked until the time of his death. Jason had an incredible passion for teaching and helping kids. He wanted to help every student he came in contact with to become the best version of themselves. He had a huge impact on so many people, both young and old.
Jason was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities, including scout master, Young Men's President, Bishopric, and was serving as the Elder's Quorum President when he died.

Jason will always be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. He was a very likable person who got along well with others. He loved music and was always playing the guitar and piano and singing with his kids. He was a life-long San Francisco 49ers fan and thought Superman was the coolest. While being his own kind of Superman in life, Jason will be a real hero in his death, as his organs are being donated to help many other people live.
Jason is survived by his loving wife, Camille, all six of their beautiful children, his parents Calvin and Catherine Winward, his Grandmother Shirley Ostler, siblings Daniel (Jennifer), Janelle (Christopher), Thomas (Cynthia), and Sara (Scott), and a gazillion aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by three grandparents and an uncle.

Funeral services for Jason will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Chubbuck LDS Stake Center, 450 James Avenue, with Bishop Ryan Lewis conducting. A viewing will be held Friday evening from 6-8:00 PM at Wilks Funeral Home, 211 W. Chubbuck Road, and from 9:30-10:30 AM prior to the services at the church. His interment will follow the services at Dayton Cemetery, in Dayton, Idaho.
