Russell Whitman - Class of 1916

The remains of Russell Whitman who was killed in Des Moines, Iowa while attempting to board a moving train were returned to his family in Montpelier. Russell was currently in training at Camp Dodge and was attempting to return there. Military services were held for him at Camp Dodge. Russell Sampson Whitman was born January 9, 1898 in Montpelier the son of Henry Briggs and Elizabeth Hunter. He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1916. He served in the US military. He died December 12, 1918 and was buried in the Montpelier Cemetery.
