Elgin Bridges - Class of 1918

Elgin Seymour Bridges, 91, died Thursday, Dec 23, 1988 at the Bear Lake County Nursing Home. He was born Sept 4, 1897 in Montpelier, to Thomas Preston and Elnora Vilate Kent Bridges. He was a member of the Montpelier High School class of 1918, however he did not graduate. He served in the US military during WWI. He married Marie Nielsen Dec 19, 1923 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He was employed by the U S Post Office until his retirement in 1965, after 41 years of service. He also owned and operated a cattle ranch near Montpelier, and was an avid horseman. He was an active member of the LDS Church, and as a young man served a mission in the central states for the church. He served as a member of the Montpelier Third Ward Bishopric and as a Scoutmaster and as a member of the building committee for the construction of the Montpelier Stake Center. He served as a member of the Bear Lake County Fair Board, Montpelier Irrigation Company and the Cattlemen's Association. He is survived by his wife of Montpelier; a daughter, Mrs. Philip (Lois Lee) Hulme, Montpelier; a son, Sherwood E. Bridges, Mt Pleasant, Mi.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs Frank (Winifred) Clary, Ogden, Ut. and Mrs Virginia Cox, Provo, Ut.; and two brothers, Russell W., Montpelier, and Seldon S. Wellsville, Ut. He was preceded in death by two sisters, a brother and a great-grandchild. Funeral services were Monday Dec 26, at the Montpelier Stake Center. Burial was in the Montpelier cemetery.
