Evelyn Wedel (Kunz) - Class of 1935

Evelyn Wedel was born in 1918, the daughter of John and Rose Wedel. She graduated from Montpelier High School in 1935. She passed away in November 2017. Her husband, David Sterling Kunz, appears to have also been a 1935 graduate of Montpelier High School, but we have no record of this. David's obituary appeared in the Ogden Standard-Examiner on January 2, 2019, as follows:

June 16, 1917 ~ November 19, 2018

David Sterling Kunz, 101, died at his home in Coronado, California on November 19, 2018. He was born on June 16, 1917, in Salt Lake City to David C. Kunz and Jessie Tibbs Kunz. David attended school in Montpelier, Idaho, where he met the love of his life, Evelyn Wedel, in the first grade. They were happily married for 72 years until her death in November 2017.

David served at L.D.S. Mission to Germany from 1936 until two weeks before World War II began. He witness the growing threat of the Third Reich and the changing climate of Germany. His experiences there foster a lifelong curiosity in world events and gave him a lifelong love of travel, history, and art.

On December 7, 1941, David was in his final year at the University of Utah College of Law. The next day he and his sixteen classmates hurried to the recruiting office to enlist in the military. The following July he entered the Navy and was later commissioned as an officer. He served as an intelligence officer in the Pacific Theater and as a reserve officer for the next ten years. He retired as a Lt. Commander. David's love of the Navy inspired his grandson Donald Woolf to serve in the Navy.

Following World War II, David and Evelyn made their home in Ogden where he practiced law with his brother Paul T. Kunz. They practiced together for forty years. David continued his practice and mentored many of Utah's most prominent lawyers. He was active in many professional organizations and served as President of the Utah State Bar in 1968. He was especially proud of his membership in the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Society of Barristers. At the time of his death, he was the oldest member of the Utah Bar Association. David also served on the Bank of Utah Board of Directors from 1958 until 2004. The couple also owned and operated Adventure Travel in Ogden for 21 years.

In 1997 David and Evelyn moved to Coronado to be near their only daughter, Laurel and her family. They spent their golden years surrounded by their family and traveling the globe. Their last trip to Europe was in 2008. They were 91 years old and enjoyed every minute.

He is predeceased by his wife Evelyn.

He is survived by his daughter, Laurel Woolf (Jim), his grandson, David Ward (Nicole) of Coronado, Alexander Woolf (Sylvie), San Francisco and Donald Woolf, serving in Yokosuka, Japan. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren.

Burial services were held at Miramar National Cemetery with full military honors.
