Vernon Wilcox - Class of 1935

Vernon Arthur Wilcox, 54, prominent Montpelier resident and. locomotive engineer, died unexpectedly of a heart attack September 20, 1968 in his room of the Club House used by crews of the Union Pacific Railroad Company at Green River. Engineer Wilcox was found dead: about 3 p.m., Friday by a caller alerting the crew for a return trip to Montpelier terminal on Streamliner Train No. 106. Mr. Wilcox was born in Montpelier, November 28, 1913, a son of the late Arthur Henry Wilcox and Adelia Mortenseon Wilcox. He was reared in and attended elementary and high schools in Montpelier, graduating from Montpelier High School in 1935. Following his father's vocation who died March 7, 1960, be began his tenure with the Union Pacific Railroad in August, 1936 as a fireman. In 1942 has was promoted to engineer. Mr. Wilcox was a member of B. of L.E. No. 324 and took a part in community affairs. An active member of the LDS Church be served as first counselor in the Fifth Ward bishopric for nearly 10 years, and was a pressdent of the Fifth Ward Elders Quorum. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Norma Wilcox Wigington. Mr. Wilcox and Grace Teuscher were married September 17, 1940 in the LDS Temple at Logan. Besides his mother, who also lives in Montpelier, be is survived by his widow and four children, Mrs. Parviz (Marilyn) Sayogi of Moshad, Iran, Roger V. Wilcox, a senior in engineering at BYU Provo, and Diane and Colleen Wilcox; three grand'hildren; and four brothers and one sister, J. Warren Wilcox of Huntington Park, California, Donald G. Wilcox of Fullerton, California, Glenn O. Wilcox of Nampa, Idaho and Earl W. Wilcox and Nell W. Wilcox, both of Montpelier. Services at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Montpelier LDS Third-Fifth Ward were conducted by Bishop Willis G. Nelson of the Fifth Ward. Prayer at the Mortuary was offered by John Teuscher and the prelude and postlude were played by Mrs. Howard Heninger. A trio, Mrs. Glenn Barnson, Mrs. Howard Tolley and Mrs. Wakio Andersen with Mrs. Preston Michaelson, accompanist, sang; "Whispering Hope." Following were invocation, Bishop Roscoe Evans; vocal duet, "Beautiful Land" Max Haddock and Mrs. E. W. Wilcox, accompanied by Mrs. J. F. Spidell; speaker, Frank Hirschi; song, "Abide With Me 'Tis Eventide," trio; benediction, Lloyd J. Eastley. Interment was in the Montpelier City Cemetery.
