Ferris Kunz - Class of 1934

Ferris M. Kunz, prominent Bear Lake County rancher and Montpelier businessman died suddenly at age 55 of a heart attackon Wednesday, May, 1974 on his ranch at Wardboro.  The son of Ferris Martin and Genevieve Keetch Kunz, he was born February 1, 1919.  A precocious student, he graduated from Montpelier High School in 1934 at the age of 15 and received his bachelor of science degree from Idaho State University in Pocatello at age 19.  His marriage to Vida Henry was on January 10, 1939.  He entered business in Montpelier by purchasing Modern Drug Store in 1969 and was in association with his son, Ferris M. Kunz Jr.  Widely known throughout the Tri-State area, Mr. Kunz had a gubernatorial appointment, been a member of the federally created Bear River Compact since April, 1987.  He had also served on the Idaho Water Resource Board for a similar period and was chairman of idaho's Negotiating Committee.  He also served on the Bear Lake Memorial Hospital Advisory Board, board of school trustees, director of Montpelier Chamber of Commerce, president of the Dry Valley Cattlemen's Association and Preston-Montpelier Irrigation Company.  He was a member of the LDS Church.  Earlier in the week he announced his candidacy for office of state senator from Legislative District 32.  He is survived by his widow, one daughter, one son and five grandchildren.  Funeral services were held in the Montpelier Stake Center.
