Robert Grunig - Class of 1942

Robert Lorain Grunig (Montpelier, Idaho) age 90 passed away October 2, 2014 surrounded by family at Bear Lake Memorial Hospital following a short illness. Bob was born October 27, 1923 at home in Montpelier to Lorain Henry Grunig and Sophia Henrietta Young Grunig. He was the oldest of 8 children. He had 4 brothers and 3 sisters. He attended grade school in Montpelier at the Washington School. Then went to Montpelier High School where he played on the basketball team. He met the love of his life, Thelda Nowland, when they were in High School. They dated for 2 years and then were married on March 12, 1944. They were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan Temple on May 28, 1956. Bob and Thelda were blessed with three children: Barbara Ann, Roger Lynn, and Steven Robert. Bob joined the service and was put in the army IRTC (Infantry Replacement Training Center). He trained at Camp Fannin in Texas. Then he was transferred to Franklin Louisiana. He was with the military police for a while and then because he could type he was moved into the record department. After being honorably discharged Bob and Thelda returned to Montpelier where he worked for Union Pacific Railroad. He retired after 30 years of service. After retirement they spent the winters in Arizona and Nevada with family and friends. Bob was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings. He was a faithful home teacher and ward clerk for many years. Bob was preceded in death by his sweetheart Thelda, 2 sisters, his son Steven, and 1 great-granddaughter ChyAnn. He is survived by his daughter Barbara (DeVerl) King of Montpelier, son Roger (Sandi) of Montpelier and daughter-in-law Donna (Deloy) Passey of Paris, a brother Glen (Judy) of Montpelier and one sister Barbara Arnell, 13 Grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 6 in the Montpelier 3rd Ward LDS Chapel. Viewing will be at 10:00 am with services at Noon. Interment will be in the Montpelier Cemetery.
